Article: Innovations During Hajj

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Assalamu Alaikum.

Sigh, yes. Unfortunately, lots of people practice innovations during Hajj (and everywhere else for that matter).

Someone might say, “Hey, what’s the big deal if there are a few innovations here and there?”

Well, Allah has ordered us to do that which He loves and has asked us to stay away from that which He does not love.

So, the one who wishes to earn the love of Allah must apply the shariah as best as they can.

However, innovations are something that people have invented thinking that it will help them gain the love of Allah.

Just a few questions:

1) Does anyone know what Allah loves more than He does? How can anyone add anything to the shariah saying that it is a “good” innovation??? If it was truly a good thing, then Allah would have revealed it to His Prophet (salallahu alaihi wasallam)!

2) Has what he has ordered us to do not enough for us? Why do people feel the need to invent practices?

The main problem with those who practice innovations is not knowing the Majesty of Allah and not understanding the religion of Islam.

This is why it is mandatory for all of us to seek knowledge from authentic sources and also ask Allah to grant us fiqh (understanding) of this religion.

As for some of the innovations that are practiced during Hajj, the following article sheds light on that:

Article: Hajj – Virtues and Contemplations

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Assalamu Alaikum.

Hajj is not just any journey. It’s meant to change us from the inside out.

In order for this to happen, one of the things that we need to do during Hajj is to contemplate over what we see around us. What is the wisdom behind the rites and what can we learn from them?

Here’s an excellent article that discusses some of the lessons that we can learn from Hajj*:

[*Some of them apply to Umrah as well.]

Note: I’d advise everyone to read this article regardless of whether you are planning to go for Hajj or not.

Yes, I know. You’re probably like “Uh….didn’t we just…like…finish Hajj?”

Yes, and time flies. Before we know it, Hajj will be here again.

So, for those of you who are seriously thinking about going for Hajj this year, I’d advise you to read this excellent article:

Beating Procrastination Series: Preparing for Hajj By Productive Muslim

After you read this article, you’ll realise why the author is asking us to prepare for Hajj 10 months in advance.

PS. Don’t forget the most important thing: doing dua to Allah that you can go to Hajj this year.

Here’s a great website which has just about everything that a student of knowledge could want:

It also contains some good information on Hajj (they’re offering a free Hajj workshop as well).

They have a nice forum as well. You can read the Hajj and Umrah related questions (answered by scholars) here and the sacrifice related questions here.

They also have newsletters. Here’s one issue that was solely dedicated to Hajj.

Lecture: The Call of Ibrahim (alaihissalam)

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Assalamu Alaikum.

When we think of Ibrahim (alaihissalam), we think of Hajj. When we think of Hajj, we think of Ibrahim (alaihissalam).

The two are inseparable.

Why? Because Allah ordered him to proclaim the Hajj, and many of the rituals of Hajj trace back to his time.

Here’s a lecture that talks more about his call:

For those of you who prefer reading, you can find a transcript (sort of) here. It’s also been translated into French, German, Bosnian and Spanish.

Article: The History of Hajj

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Assalamu Alaikum.

Everyone loves a good history lesson (assuming, of course, that it is not a history lesson, complete with class, books and boring teacher rattling of a whole lot of dates), especially if it’s about that epic journey that we all yearn to make: Hajj.

So, what is the history of Hajj?

Here’s an article which gives us a (brief, too brief) look at it:

[For those of you who are in Saudia Arabia (and hence cannot access Islam QA), I’ve pasted the article that is mentioned at the end about the History of Makkah right after this one.]
